Bompas & Parr X London Festival Of Architecture - Architectural Fireworks Competition

Project Details

Project Type: Competition

Timeline: May 2024 - Ongoing

Position: Shortlisted [Winner TBD]

Role: Architectural Designer

“For the ‘Architectural Fireworks’ design competition, participants are asked to reimagine fireworks as part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA). The competition will culminate in an Architectural Blasting Chamber experience and exhibition featuring the most groundbreaking submissions and winners. These two experiences aim to explore how fireworks can be used in architecture today and in the future.

This was open call is for UK, European and International architects, technologists, dreamers, inventors, and professional pyrotechnicians to ignite creativity and innovation in the world of fireworks and reimagine the traditional firework.”

For my entry I focussed on how Fireworks could become more sustainable through the use of bioluminscent plankton. As water temperatures rise, the migration of these plankton has seen them endanger other species. PlankTNT is devised to redistribute these plankton back to areas which need them alongside the farming and preservation of the bioluminscent plankton. The full description is below;

"PlankTNT

A bioluminescent projectile made from dinoflagellates.

Here at PlankLIFE, we are committed to ensuring the lives of plankton across the world are monitored and maintained. Due to rising sea temperatures, plankton, especially the bioluminescent dinoflagellates, are at risk in their natural habitats and

jeopardise indigenous species where they have migrated. Therefore, we have set up farms across the world to improve population levels in endangered areas and mitigate those that pose a threat. The excess dinoflagellates endangering the plankton in

traditionally colder regions have provided an opportunity… PlankTNT. By creating a projectile with the surplus dinoflagellates, we can boost the population in deficient areas while retaining the wonder and colour these creatures create. Bottled at source these plankton can be easily transported across the globe in a safe refrigerated state to their final destination. The PlankTNT kit comes with nine projectiles and one litre of dinoflagellates suspended in water. Envisioned as a seed bomb for the sea, the projectiles are made from nutrient rich sugar glass bombs. They smash like glass with that distinctive sound while the plankton glow a bright blue-green when they strike a surface giving that same sense of danger and awe. Part sparkler, part fun snap, part

peony but entirely natural. Providing a sustainable firework that is unlike any other.
